These days, innovations in smart phones tend to be centered largely on outside applications and operating system updates, rather than the phones themselves. In fact, many consumers tend to believe that smart phones have come about as far as they’re going to for a while, with models like the iPhone 5 establishing a standard “model” that can only be tweaked and perfected in small ways. For this reason, examples of exciting developments may be as follows:
A new operating system, such as Apple’s new iOS 7, might make major waves for revolutionizing the internal display of a phone, or adding small perks like new photo storing, etc.
The introduction of real money gambling to smartphones has been significant in recent years. Betfair is one example of an online casino that now produces multiple apps allowing users to place actual bets on sports and games alike through mobile phones.
Fully external developments such as new cases (check out the LG G2‘s “quick window,” new headphones, new docks, etc. can enhance our already sublime smartphones.
But among these external developments and small-scale tweaks, a few incredible developments in actual phones have been overlooked. Consider for example the Samsung Galaxy S4. Lost somewhat in the hype for iPhone 5S, and even the coming Galaxy Note 3, the Galaxy S4 presented us with a number of wholly unique features. Here are a few to think about if you’re considering a new phone.
Dual Shot – This feature allows users to take pictures with the front and back camera lenses at the same time. It’s a fun way to “stamp” yourself on a photo you take, to indicate you were there as well!
Sound & Shot – Another photo feature, this fun application actually adds a sound effect to your pictures. The example Samsung shows on its site is a couple popping a bottle of champagne, which can be a great sound accompaniment to a meaningful photo.
Group Play – Samsung phones can sync up wirelessly for multiple activities, and now one of those is to build a sound system! Link with friends’ phones to get them playing the same music with enhanced quality (not just volume).
Air View – This is a previewing feature that makes certain tasks like calling a friend, managing a contact or sending an email easier. Air View pulls up what you’re going for before you’re even finished looking!
Air Gesture – This is more of a gimmick, but still a fun feature. Now with an S4, you don’t even need to touch the screen to do certain things. For example, “wave” through contacts just by sweeping your hand over the phone.
Ultimately, in terms of design, smartphones seem to have reached a sort of standard concept. However, unique features like these can keep a phone fresh and new, and they’re why many consumers are considering the S4 as their next phone.
The next Nexus phone is coming soon and the rumors are that it’s called the Nexus 5.
There is not much information out on the phone yet except for a few leaked pictures and possible renders like the 3d render below.
Sounds like the screen will be at least a 4.7″ at 1080p with 2GB of RAM and a quad-core processor. Since the new moto x has some cool software features we’re guessing this flagship google phone will have some impressive Android features not found in any other phone out on the market.
Finally the Galaxy Note 2 has been announced for Verizon! It’s actually coming to Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and US Cellular too.
An easy way to think about the Galaxy Note 2 is that it’s basically the Galaxy S3 with a bigger screen, processor and battery…so it’s one of the best smartphones you can buy if you want Android.
The Galaxy Note 2 is the first Samsung phone to ship with Android 4.1 and first USA phone to sport a QUAD-CORE processor. Yep, you can hold that over everyone else’s smartphone…your Galaxy Note 2 has a quad-core processor. Checkout the best cases for the Galaxy Note 2.
It’s a bit more then a refresh of the Note 1 because not only is it running on a much faster processor and 2x the RAM, but it’s got some awesome new features from the little brother the Galaxy S3 that are very popular.
Another phone that just came out that is equally as capable is the Nexus 4, it’s a little bit smaller and easier to handle too. Check it out here.
S Beam that allows you to share photos by bumping with another S Beam phone.
Share Shot: share pictures with other phones wirlessly
Burst shot and best shot: shoot up to 20 burst shots or up to 8 burst shots and pic the best pics.
Popup Video: a video can popup in a window over other applications…watch a video while browsing the web or typing an email.
The first is the S-pen which has many cool features no other smartphone has.
Easy Clip feature allows you to instantly outline and crop any content on the screen in any shape to save, share or paste. Once done cropping the image, you can freely edit the cropped content through coloring, shading or their own personal handwriting.
Air View allows you to hover with the S Pen over an email, calendar entry, image gallery or video to preview the content without having to open it or wait for screen transitions. This feature also enables you to preview Web site content without opening the full site. Air View provides a title description for unrecognizable icons in various applications.
Quick Command, the S Pen quickly activates applications and services people use most often. The command pad appears with one upward swipe on the screen with the S Pen button pressed down. You can send an email, make a call or search a location with pre-registered and customized S Pen strokes marks made on the command pad.
Idea Sketch allows you to easily add illustrations by handwriting keywords on the S Note. It provides illustration images that match the handwritten keywords. It’s a fancy illustration match function that will allow you to express, organize and visualize ideas in a more innovative and creative way. You can even customize and add in their own illustrations library.
Photo Notes launches a new browser window when you click on a link embedded in an email.

Update, the Droid DNA has been announced! Post coming soon.
Yep, Moto is releasing the Droid RAZR HD & the RAZR Maxx HD
So the obvious question is what’s the big difference between the RAZR HD vs RAZR MAXX HD???
Two things…the battery and a few centimeters. The MAXX HD is only 9.3mm thick (same as iPhone 4s)
Droid RAZR HD – 2,500mAh battery at 8.4mm thick
Droid RAZR MAXX HD – 3,300mAh battery at 9.3mm thick
(The RAZR HD 8.4mm vs RAZR MAXX HD 9.3mm)
Kabam…say hello to 32 hours of usage time! Yep, Moto is saying the RAZR MAXX HD can get up to 32 hours of mixed usage because of software efficiencies and the big daddy 3,300mAh battery. Your sisters iPhone 4 only has a 1,400mAh battery can has a 12 hour battery rating….good for a day if you’re lucky.
With the 4.7-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM both the RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD can keep up with the Galaxy S3.
Do you buy this phone or not? YES, it’s basically equal to any other high end smartphone out in 2012 PLUS it has a battery that lasts twice as long as any other smartphone!
Also, as you can see by the picture above the big battery hardly adds any size or thickness (9.3mm)…shoot I’d take an even bigger battery for more thickness.
